MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – South Carolina ranks among the worst states to raise a family, according to a new study.
Personal finance website WalletHub compared the 50 states across several key indicators for ‘family friendliness,’ including median family income, housing affordability and unemployment rate.
According to the study, the Palmetto State ranked 43rd overall.
South Carolina also ranked 41st for family fun, 38th for health and safety, 38th for education and childcare and 44th for affordability.
Despite being ranked 5th in the country for lowest childcare costs, the Palmetto State was among the worst for infant mortality, sporting a 47th ranking.
The study found Massachusetts was the best state to raise a family, while New Mexico was the worst.
