SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Redshirt junior Hayden Brown has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week presented by GEICO following his big outing in The Citadel’s 92-87 victory over Chattanooga to open conference play on Saturday afternoon.
Brown tallied a career-best 37 points and hauled in 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season, helping the Bulldogs to snap a 20-game skid in conference play with the victory over the Mocs. The weekly honor is the first of Brown’s career and the first Player of the Week award for any player from The Citadel since former Bulldog Kaelon Harris earned the honor on Jan. 14, 2020.
After missing his first five shots on Saturday, Brown finished 10-of-12 the rest of the way and knocked down a career-best seven three-pointers. He scored 23 of his 37 points in the second half as The Citadel held off Chattanooga down the stretch.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Brown ranks fourth among all Division I players with 23.4 points per game and is averaging a double-double with 10.7 rebounds; both marks also lead all SoCon players. The Greer, S.C., native’s 37-point performance is tied for the 10th-best by any player this season and he is one of only 18 players across the nation with multiple 30-point games after also scoring 31 earlier this season against Columbia International. Those two 30-point games are the only contests with 30 or more points by a SoCon player this season.
