CONWAY, S.C. (WMBF) - As the Horry County community continues to mourn the loss of fallen police officer LCpl. Melton “Fox” Gore, those who knew him best are remembering him.

“Every time I run across somebody, they go ‘hey you look like Fox’ and I say ‘yea I’m his twin’ and they go ‘God what a great guy’ and that always made me feel great about him,” said Milton Gore, Gore’s twin brother.

Milton said his brother had a servant’s heart for his community and that is how he’ll be remembered.

“He’s a person of service not just in that uniform, but a service to his community, a service to people, always looking to help somebody,” he said.

Gore, who grew up in Little River, served as an environmental officer with the Horry County Police Department for more than 20 years.

He was hit and killed by a car Tuesday night while picking up debris along Highway 22.

Gore’s patrol vehicle now sits outside the county’s public safety building in Conway as a temporary memorial to honor his life of service.

Gary Gause worked with Gore in the Horry County Environmental Service Department. He’s now retired.

“I first met Fox in 1998,” said Gause. “Officer Gore was one of the most beloved officers. He was a guy that if you see him, he was always smiling.”

Milton said his brother followed in their father’s footsteps, who was once an officer with the Atlantic Beach Police Department.

The job was very fitting for his brother.

Milton and longtime friend, Van Gause, recalled times when Gore would help deliver food and other items to senior citizens and families in the community. They said he loved helping others and always had a smile on his face while doing it.

“God takes the best and Gore was one of the best God took from us,” said Van.

“He was a huge pillar in this community,” said Milton. “That’s my twin. That’s my boy.”
