CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Lowcountry native Shelby Rogers will have to wait another 11+ months to try and win her first tournament in her hometown.
Rogers, the 3rd seed in this weeks MUSC Health Women’s Open on Daniel Island was upset by Danka Kovinic in the quarterfinals on Friday, 7-5, 6-1.
After the match, Rogers said she was held back a bit by an injury, but gave Kovinic, who reached the finals of the Volvo Car Open last week, all the credit.
“I’ve had a little ab strain so wasn’t feeling 100 percent, I tried my best, sorry it was that obvious. And it’s a big part of my game too so it’s tough not to have that but nothing against her she played great today and like I said she’s playing super confident so she’s definitely deserves to be in the next round”
Kovinic will face the tournaments top seed on Saturday as #1 Ons Jabeur advanced in less than 50 minutes over Nao Hibino 6-0, 6-1.
On the other side of the bracket, Maria Camila Osorio Serrano advanced to the semifinals after her opponent Clara Tauson had to withdraw with an injury. Serrano will face Astra Sharma in the semifinals on Saturday. Sharma beat 15-year old Linda Fruhvirtova 6-4, 6-3 on Friday.
The Semifinals will begin at 2pm on Saturday.
