Employees needed to meet spike in tourism
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau says they’ve seen noticeable increases in visitation and hotel occupancy over the last month.
Communications Director Chris Campbell says they’ve seen increases in tourism specifically over the last few weekends, getting closer to pre-pandemic numbers.
Monday through Thursday Campbell says hotel bookings are about 12.5% lower than this time in 2019. However, for weekends, he says those booking numbers are only down 3% from around this time of year in 2019.
On Wednesday, the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce is hosting a virtual job fair for Charleston and North Charleston Marriott hotels and the Belmond Charleston Place Hotel.
That job fair is open online from 10 a.m. to noon. Folks are asked to register beforehand on SC Works’ webpage.
SC Works spokesperson Daniel Monroe says the format of the job fair will begin with brief one-on-one chats with employer representatives. If candidates have additional questions or would like to apply, they will receive instructions directly from the employer’s human resources team.
Monroe says the virtual interviews are accessible by computer or smartphone. If needed, people can make an appointment to use one of the computers at a local SC Works center on SC Works’ scheduler page.
The job openings range from house keepers, restaurant servers, and maintenance technicians.
Various other hospitality job fairs continue to hire employees in the Lowcountry area and hold similar events.
The Vice President of Communications for Salamander Hotels says they hired about 20 staff members as a result of their hiring event for Hotel Bennett two weeks ago. He also says their online applications substantially increased.
The Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau says their last hiring event at the North Charleston Convention Center a few weeks ago was successful. They are planning another hospitality job fair for May 12 in Mount Pleasant. More details on that are set to be released soon.
