Firefighter accused of stealing copper at scene of blaze
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - We’re looking into a new investigation into an Augusta firefighter.
An incident report from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says he stole copper while on the scene of a house fire.
Aaron Jefferson has been listed as a suspect.
According to a incident report, a firefighter saw Jefferson pull wire from a camper and then stuck it in his pocket.
“Aaron was in the back yard when another fireman observed him pull copper wire from a camper and wrap it around his hand,” the incident report stated.
When the battalion chief brought it up, the report says, Jefferson took it out.
The incident report from a Richmond County deputy stated: “Aaron stated he did take the copper wire but his intention were not to steal it. Aaron stated that a fire has to be extremely hot to burn the wire and he wanted to show his wife the wire. Aaron stated he was just going to take a picture of the wire and then return it.”
The homeowner did not want to press charges
We have asked the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office if charges are still possible.
We’ve also asked the Augusta Fire Department about the case, and the agency issued this statement:
“The Augusta Fire Department was made aware of an incident involving a firefighter during a suppression operation that occurred yesterday. Due to the nature of the incident, an investigation into the allegations is now underway. Due to the active investigation, the Department will not be issuing any further statements.”
