COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office says a 10th-grade student has been charged with having a gun on school property.

Deputies charged the teen, whose name and gender were not released, with possession of a firearm on school property.

Colleton Preparatory Academy notified deputies on Tuesday about a disturbance that happened on Monday after school hours, Detective Laura Rutland said.

School authorities told investigators a student was arguing with classmates in the parking lot after sports practice and removed a firearm from their vehicle. Deputies said they interviewed several students involved before arresting the suspect.

The student was dismissed from the school and has been charged criminally.

Deputies took the student to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
