HOLLYWOOD, SC (WCSC) - Dr. Gerald Schuster, former Hollywood mayor, died Thursday.

Schuster, a one-term mayor, was often in the public eye because of his political feud with some of the members of his town council.

"It's like a lot of things. You hear the bad or you see the bad news, then you don't see a whole lot of the good news," said his wife, Marlene.

But for his family, he was a man with passion who cared deeply about his community.

"I couldn't help but wonder why he wanted to get into politics in Hollywood, South Carolina," said his long time friend, Frank Marvin.

Marvin then realized he got involved in politics because he wanted to help people.

"A very intelligent man, willing to help and willing to stand for what he wanted to do and what he thought was right for the people of Hollywood," Marvin said.

"When he knew what was right, he would fight for what was right," his wife said.

Education and housing were two of his main concerns, Marvin added.

He was a man guided by faith in god and laws, Marlene said.

"The constitution, the bible, these are laws. All laws are laws and you got to follow the law," his wife said he would always say.

It's been just hours after his death and his wife said she had already heard from residents, friends and political foes alike.

Schuster was a doctor for 53 years, but first and foremost he was a husband and father.

"I had the most loving, caring husband. He loved me to death," Marlene said.

Schuster was 78. He died because of complications with heart problems.

Hollywood's current mayor, Jackie Heyward, said Schuster will be sadly missed.

"He was an asset to the community," she said.

J. Henry Stuhr Inc. is handling the arrangements. A visitation starts at noon Sunday at Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel at 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway. The funeral will follow. The burial will be private.
