Elephant takes wrong turn on way to circus arena floor

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A circus elephant took a wrong turn and broke through a prop door during a pre-show event at the Colonial Life Arena.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus spokeswoman Crystal Drake told The State newspaper of Columbia that no one was hurt in Saturday's incident.

Drake said the pre-show event ended after the elephant went down the wrong hallway, broke through the door and walked onto the arena floor just feet from about 100 spectators.

Drake said the errant female elephant was enticed back to her proper location and the main show went on as scheduled.

Animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said in a statement Sunday it wants the U.S. Agriculture Department to investigate the animal's treatment.
