Nurse charged over drug theft in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, TX - HUNTSVILLE, TX (AP) - A former Huntsville Memorial Hospital nurse who allegedly stole $6,000 in prescription drugs for her own use is charged with theft.

Brandie Marie Hyatt of Florence, S.C., was in the Walker County Jail on Wednesday with bail set at $3,000. A jailer, who declined to give her name, told The Associated Press had no attorney listed for Hyatt.

Police on Monday arrested Hyatt, at an RV park, on one count of theft, a state jail felony. The Huntsville Item reports the 31-year-old nurse confessed to police.

Sgt. Jim Barnes says Hyatt allegedly took partly emptied vials of liquid painkillers to support her addiction. She resigned March 9 after being confronted by her bosses.

HMH spokeswoman Calli Baker says Hyatt had not worked at the facility long and the hospital took the issue very seriously.
