Officials removing abandoned boats near SC coast

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Officials are preparing to remove some abandoned boats near the South Carolina coast.

About a dozen abandoned boats will be moved, many of them now along the Ashley River in Charleston.

Officials have obtained a $60,000 grant to pay for the work.

Charleston Police Sgt. Chad Womack says the project has been planned for months. Womack says legal notices had to be posted warning that the boats would be removed, to see if an owner would claim the craft.

7 of the 12 boats are in one location. 5 of the boats are 40-feet or longer. None appear to be salvageable. Most have been stripped of any valuables.

About 65 similar boats have been removed, many from Georgetown, Mount Pleasant and Folly Beach.
