Last Walterboro gang suspect turns himself in

COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - The last of 20 Colleton County gang suspects turned himself in Wednesday morning.

A spokeswoman confirmed that Laron Bennett, 23, turned himself into the State Law Enforcement Division in Columbia.

Bennett is charged with three counts of murder and four counts of assault and battery with intent to kill. Those charges are in connection with a Nov. 9 drive-by shooting in Walterboro that killed a 20-month-old child and two adults.

Authorities said those charged in the shooting belong to the Sand Hill gang, a gang based in the Ritter community.

Law enforcement agents served 20 indictments on 65 charges related to criminal gang activity on June 30. More than 130 agents hit the streets in Walterboro and 15 of the 20 suspects were in custody by the end of the day.
