911 tapes released in SC small plane crash

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Witnesses reported smoke and explosions and urged emergency personnel to send fire trucks to the scene of a small plane crash that killed two at an RV park in North Myrtle Beach.

Horry County officials released tapes of 911 calls to WPDE-TV under the Freedom of Information Act.

The plane's pilot, 62-year-old Kenneth Thode of Plymouth, Mass., and a woman sitting inside her recreational vehicle were killed Jan. 18. The woman was identified as 70-year-old Eva Sullivan of Sunapee, N.H.

The plane has been taken to Washington to examination, and the National Transportation Safety Board is expected to release a preliminary report on the crash soon.

Officials say the pilot was practicing takeoffs and landings in the single-engine Cessna.
