ST. GEORGE, S.C. (AP) - Revelers in the small town of St. George are celebrating the Southern diet staple - grits.
The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports that the 26th annual World Grits Festival is under way.
Saturday events include the rolling in the grits competition during which contestants dive into a large pool of grits to see how much weight they can add by accumulating the tiny white pieces of ground corn in their hair, clothes and on their bodies. The one who adds the most pounds wins a prize.
Festivities continue Sunday.
The festival began in 1986 and St. George is the self-proclaimed Grits Capital of the World.
Organizers estimate the weekend event has drawn as many as 45,000 visitors in past years. Proceeds from the festival fund scholarships for local students.
