The Citadel's Nick Orvin makes All-SoCon First Team

SPARTANBURG, SC - Spartanburg, S.C. – The Citadel's Nick Orvin was named to the all-conference first team while Drew DeKerlegand and Joe Jackson were named to the all-freshman team on Monday as announced by the Southern Conference office. The league's 11 head coaches selected two all-conference teams and an all-freshman team.

Orvin (Moncks Corner, S.C.) earned first team all-conference in 2011 after being named to the second team in 2010 and to the all-freshman team in 2009. The junior outfielder entered the career top-10 at The Citadel in runs scored this season and sits just three base knocks away from entering the career top-10 in hits. This season, Orvin batted .320 with 74 hits, 47 runs, 14 doubles, nine home runs, 32 RBI, 23 walks and 19 stolen bases. He led the squad in hits, runs, homers, total bases, slugging percentage, walks and stolen bases in 2011. The centerfielder reached base in the final 23 game of the season.

DeKerlegand (Pearland, Texas) started all 56 games in 2011 at third base for the Bulldogs and finished with an average of .317 with 32 runs, 66 hits, 11 doubles, four triples, two homers and 24 RBI to go with 15 walks. The freshman was second on the team in triples, on base percentage and total bases and reached base in the final 16 contests of the season.

Jackson (Mauldin, S.C.) alternated duties at catcher and designated hitter in 2011, starting in 45 games and seeing action in 54 games. The freshman hit .302 with 25 runs scored, 51 hits, eight doubles, two triples, 23 RBI, 20 walks and four stolen bases.

Georgia Southern picked up both of the major league awards as sophomore Victor Roache was named Player of the Year and junior Matt Murray was tabbed as the Pitcher of the Year in the league.

UNCG head coach Mike Gaski was voted as the league's Coach of the Year while College of Charleston outfielder Daniel Aldrich earned Freshman of the Year honors.

College of Charleston, Georgia Southern and Samford led the way with five all-conference selections apiece. Western Carolina earned three all-league nods followed by two each from Elon and UNCG, the top two teams in the final conference standings.

Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players or themselves in the voting process.
