BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say five people including an 8-year-old are now safe after their boat sank Saturday evening in Lake Moultrie.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources along with Berkeley County Rescue Squad responded to a call of boat in distress at around 7:50.

According to authorities the boat was in the lake near Channel Marker 9 when it started having mechanical issues. A family friend was heading out to the lake to work on the boat, but during that time frame the wind started picking up and sending waves into the boat causing it to sink.

The Assistant Chief for the Berkeley County Rescue squad said, everyone aboard the boat had jumped into the lake. Everyone on board was wearing a life vest.

Passerbyers on the lake went over to help until authorities arrived on the scene. All five people were taken to land and no one was injured.

The boat was towed by a friend of the family.
