GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - Two men were having a few late-night beers Sunday in the driveway of a Goose Creek home when things turned violent. Police say one of the men allegedly beat the other with a sledgehammer, dislodging his right eyeball from the socket.
Goose Creek police responded to 113 Pandora Drive in the Greenview Subdivision around 2 a.m. Sunday in reference to a possible assault. When officers arrived, three witnesses frantically yelling for help pointed them in the direction of the victim who was lying on the ground behind a pick-up truck.
The male victim had extensive injuries to his face and head and was bleeding excessively. His right eyeball was dislodged from its socket and it appeared that he had been assaulted with a sledgehammer, according to police.
The victim was transported by ambulance to MUSC. His injuries are life threatening.
Police later arrested 32-year-old Ricardo Perez Flores and charged him with attempted murder. The sledgehammer was recovered at the scene.
Witnesses told investigators that shortly after midnight, the victim arrived at the residence with an unknown male, who arrived separately in a white Chevrolet work van. The victim told the group that he had met the man, later identified as Flores, at a gas station and invited him over to drink beer.
According to the police report, the three witnesses went inside the home while the victim and Flores stayed outside and drank beer in the driveway area. About two hours later, one of the witnesses heard banging sounds outside.
She went to the front door, looked outside and heard the suspect's van start up. She then opened the door and saw Flores back into a ditch in front of the home and then leave the scene at a high rate of speed.
She went out in the driveway and found the victim lying on the ground. When officers arrived, she described the suspect as a Hispanic male wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt and possibly a baseball hat
A second patrol unit conducted a traffic stop a short time later on a white van and arrested the driver who authorities say matched the description of the suspect. Police say the suspect, Flores, of Ladson, had blood stains and splatter on his t-shirt as well as his himself.
The victim sustained injuries on his head and trauma to his liver, which caused internal bleeding.
