SC officials watch for possible evacuation orders

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina emergency management officials are urging the public to stay alert about the movement of Hurricane Irene and make preparations for possible coastal evacuation orders.

Emergency Management Division spokesman Derrec Becker says if the National Weather Service projects a possible Saturday landfall for the hurricane in South Carolina, an evacuation order could come as soon as Thursday.

Becker emphasizes it is too soon to tell exactly what the storm might do. He says Gov. Nikki Haley and Emergency Management Director George McKinney are closely monitoring the situation, along with county, city and federal emergency officials.
