JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - A man is in custody after Charleston County sheriff's deputies say he broke into a James Island home Tuesday afternoon, only to be subdued by the owner and held at gunpoint until deputies arrived.

Deputies responded to a call around 1 p.m. that said a suspected burglar was being held at gunpoint after allegedly breaking into the Mohawk Drive home. When deputies arrived, the found 43-year-old Mark Steven Caddell being held at gunpoint.

After interviewing the homeowner, deputies determined that Caddell had broken a back window in an attempt to enter the home, but was unsuccessful. He later tried to knock on the back door, but the homeowner did not answer. He then allegedly forced entry into the home.

When the homeowner heard glass break, he grabbed his gun and discovered Caddell climbing on his bed. The homeowner detained Caddell until deputies arrived.

According to the police report, when asked why he broke into the home, Caddell said that he "was trying to steal whatever he could."

Caddell was taken into custody at the scene. No other suspects are being sought in this incident. Caddell is charged with first degree burglary. A bond hearing has not yet been scheduled.
