Troopers: Charleston man fell asleep at the wheel, killing 1

Jasper County (WCSC) - - A man from Charleston is facing charges after the South Carolina Highway Patrol says he fell asleep at the wheel Sunday morning, killing one of the passengers in his SUV.

According to investigators, 20-year-old Ludvin Andrez-Gonzalez was behind the wheel when he fell asleep while driving on Interstate 95 in Jasper County. Troopers say he ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected and caused the Expedition to overturn with nine people inside at the time.

One of the passengers, Ernesto Santiz-Lopez died at the hospital. Troopers say Andrez-Gonzalez fled the scene of the wreck.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office arrested Andrez-Gonzalez four hours after the crash. They say tracking dogs found him in some woods near the crash.

He is now behind bars facing multiple charges including leaving the scene involving a death, driving too fast for conditions and driving without a South Carolina driver's license.
