NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police say they arrested 8 people on Sunday evening after finding a handgun at an impromptu card game held in the front yard of a concerned resident's North Charleston home.
North Charleston Police Department officers were dispatched to a home on Ranger Drive on Sunday around 6 p.m. Upon arrival, officers said they saw a crowd gathered around a vehicle, playing cards and illegally gambling.
Police said that as they approached, they noticed 22-year-old Tyrell Bess holding an object close to his waistband with both hands. Officers said the man then walked from the hood of the vehicle to the driver side door before kneeling and placing the object underneath the vehicle.
Police said they immediately detained Bess and checked out the object, which turned out to be a .45 caliber handgun, fully loaded with a bullet in the chamber. After checking Bess's records, police learned that he was a felon prohibited from possessing firearms in the state of South Carolina. He was charged with felon in possession of a pistol.
The incident report states that police on scene then asked the others on scene why they were there, to which they replied that they were hanging out with a female that lived at the home.
Officers then went to speak to the residents at the home, who said they did not know any of the men standing in front of their house. As a result police arrested all on scene and charged them with disorderly conduct.
The following suspects were arrested: 19-year-old Rashard Wright, 30-year-old Shannon Sims, 19-year-old Denzel Weiters, 30-year-old Elton Weiters, 19-year-old Ricky Martin, and 24-year-old Leonard Nathaniel.
A juvenile was also arrested.
