Local parenting support group offering help to prevent child abuse

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Parents Anonymous is a parenting support group in the Lowcountry that tries to prevent incidents of child abuse. They offer classes and other resources to make sure parents have help when they need it.

"There are resources for parents that are feeling frustrated with their children or feeling that they have no place to turn and that's certainly places like parents anonymous," said Executive Director of Parents Anonymous Troy Strother.

Strother said unfortunately it does seem like there are more child abuse cases now then in years past.

"Yes, it's still prevalent and with this economy and with all the stresses that families are going through we see a higher number of reported cases. But we also see a higher number of parents trying to seek help," said Strother.

At Parents Anonymous many of the teen discussion groups start with why teenage moms get pregnant in the first place.

For more information on the resources parents anonymous can provide call 1-800-326-8621.

Parents Anonymous next free child abuse and prevention training meeting will take place next Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the North Charleston City Hall chambers. It's open to parents, grandparents, teachers, and child care workers.
