Police: Missing SC lobbyist's car reveals no evidence

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia Police say a check of missing hospitality official Tom Sponseller's car shows nothing unusual and calls to his cell phone are not being returned.

Sponseller, President of the South Carolina Hospitality Association and graduate of The Citadel, was reported missing by a family member Saturday night after repeated attempts by relatives and friends to contact him directly were unsuccessful.

His family told police it is unusual for Sponseller not to respond to their calls or make contact with them. Police say his family concerned for his safety and well-being.

He was last seen at work on Lady St. in downtown Columbia around noon on Saturday. Police said Sponseller's car has been located, but aren't releasing where it was found.

Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott said Monday that investigators looked Sponseller's car over, but they did not find anything unusual.

"I think half of Columbia has called his cell phone and he has not answered," said Scott.

Sponseller is a 61-year-old white male, approximately 6 feet 1 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds. He has gray hair, hazel eyes and typically wears glasses.

If you know where Sponseller is, you are urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
