Home invasion shooting victim 'made the ultimate sacrifice'
DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Jumping in front of bullets aimed for someone else. Neighbors say it was the last act of 24-year-old Daniel Robinson, who moved in front of his 55-year-old roommate and was shot multiple times by three men invading their trailer early Sunday morning on Brooks Loop in Knightsville.
"I put the cross together and I'm going to put flowers up and pictures," said next door neighbor and friend Joel Hiemstra.
With splintered wood found in his backyard, extra nails from his neighbors porch and flowers bought by community, Hiemstra constructed a cross for Robinson.
It's his attempt at still trying to find the right way to say goodbye.
"Everybody around here loved him," said Hiemstra, placing statues of angels around the cross.
Just five hours before Hiemstra was woken up by police sirens and flashing lights, the two were sitting next to each other on his couch.
"Saturday night we were hanging out, watching movies playing video games," said Hiemstra. "We were just hanging out, having fun..."
After the T.V. went off and Robinson walked across the yard back to where he was staying, the Dorchester County Coroner said three people kicked his door.
"There's actually a big dent on the bottom of the door," Hiemstra agreed. "They kicked the door down."
The coroner says once inside the trio shot him and his 55-year-old female roommate who owns the home.
Hiemstra says before Robinson's roommate was taken to the hospital she told neighbors the 24-year-old jumped in front of one of the shooters, trying to save her.
"He could have run out the door and saved himself and run away from the gunshots," said Hiemstra. "He didn't. He ran in there and they turned and shot him instead."
Which is why the community gathered around Hiemstra's makeshift cross for Robinson Monday.
"He made the ultimate sacrifice," said his friend. "He gave his life so somebody else could live."
Robinson's roommate was taken to an area hospital. Neighbors say she was shot eight times and after emergency surgery is now making a slow recovery.
The Dorchester County Coroner says Robinson suffered multiple gunshot wounds that penetrated his heart, liver and lungs. Because of the gunshot wounds, Robinson died as a result of bleeding out.
The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office is still actively investigating the shooting.
