Suspect arrested for armed robbery at Arby's on James Island

JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Police have arrested a 25-year-old man for an armed robbery at the Arby's restaurant on Folly Road on James Island.

Charleston police charged Melvin Laurence Gathers of North Charleston with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Authorities say Gathers was taken into custody around 5 p.m. at the Econo Lodge on 2237 Savannah Highway. Police say they executed a search warrant at the room he was staying at.

Investigators also executed a search warrant on Hanover Street in reference to the armed robbery.

The robbery happened around 9 p.m. on Monday when two armed men entered the restaurant, robbed it and fled on foot.

Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis said the suspects were two men who were dressed all in black at the time of the robbery.  One suspect was between 5'11" and 6' with a thin build. The other is about 5'8".
