PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WMBF) – A mass of dead fish covering a half-mile-wide area washed up on the beach in Pawleys Island on Tuesday.

Marine experts have told Pawleys Island Police Chief Michael Fanning that they believe the fish died due to a lack of oxygen.

For now, the plan is to leave the dead fish on the beach at the south end of Pawleys Island, and to let the tide wash them out, Chief Fanning confirmed.

Chief Fanning was told Monday the same phenomenon happened in the private beach of the Debordieu Beach Colony.
