MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A man looking to buy a cell phone through the popular website Craigslist got more than he bargained for Sunday night.

"He said he was at work," said Richard Kannegieser, who was hoping to buy a new smartphone. "He would get off work at 6 o'clock, and he could meet me at Celebrity Square at Broadway."

According to the Myrtle Beach Police incident report, two men arranged to meet in a parking lot in Broadway at the Beach around 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

The victim had arranged to buy a Samsung Galaxy 4 cell phone from the suspect for $350.

After exchanging the cash for the phone, the victim "put his SIM card in the cell phone to test it," the report states.

That's when the suspect presented a gun, saying, "Here is what I want you to do. Get in your car and leave and don't try to follow me," as he grabbed the phone and started running.

The victim says he chased the man on foot, watching him get into a black convertible Mustang and drive away.

"He could take my money, but I wasn't going to let him get away with it," Kannegieser said.

About 12 hours later, 23-year-old Dawan Jamal Thompson was taken into custody and charged with armed robbery.
