Orangeburg officials concerned about 3 jail deaths

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - The suicides of 3 inmates in less than four months have Orangeburg County leaders looking for ways to prevent such deaths at the jail in the future.

County leaders say they want to know if jail officials should do anything different.

Three inmates have committed suicide in recent months, including a woman who hanged herself Wednesday. Inmates also killed themselves in February and November. A cause of death hasn't been determined for an inmate who died in October.

County Council Chairman Johnnie Wright says officials are working to determine if any changes need to be made.

The woman who killed herself Wednesday wasn't on suicide watch because officials say she had done nothing to indicate she wanted to hurt herself.
