Sheriff: Man tasered on birthday after 100-mph chase near St. George

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A 40-year-old man was tasered twice last weekend on his birthday after he led deputies on a 100 mile-per-hour chase near St. George, authorities say.

The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said they arrested Michael McCroan, of Sandridge Road, early Saturday morning after the chase.  McCroan was born on March 16 in 1973.

Deputies said they were patrolling Wire Road near Stokes Bridge Road around 12:16 a.m. when they saw McCroan drive by in his Kia Soul, exceeding the posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour. Deputies said they immediately activated their lights and siren and attempted to stop McCroan, but he sped up to approximately 100 miles per hour.

The report states McCroan turned onto Sandridge Road and then turned left onto Smoak Road, a dirt road, where he stopped near a wooded area and began to run. Deputies said McCroan failed to heed commands to stop, and then climbed over a large fence.

The report states one deputy then deployed his Taser, striking McCroan in his mid and lower back area. The deputy said he cycled a 5-second electrical shock to McCroan, who fell to the ground.

Deputies said they ordered McCroan to place his hands at his sides, but he would not, so they emitted another 5-second shock cycle to the suspect.  He then complied with their demands, the report states.

During a search of the Kia, deputies said they found an open can of alcohol.

McCroan was charged with failure to stop for blue lights and siren, resisting arrest, driving under suspension, and open container.

He was taken to the Dorchester County Detention Center.
