CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police say a man helped them find a burglary suspect after a woman discovered him in her downtown Charleston home Tuesday night.

According to Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis, officers responded to a burglary-in-progress call around 11 p.m. at 75 Society Street.

Francis said the victim walked downstairs to find 42-year-old Stacey Brown standing in her living room looking in her handbag. The victim told police she yelled at the man, who became startled and ran out of the house. The victim chased after the suspect.

Francis said a witness saw the man run out of the apartment so he called the police and provided them with a description of the suspect and where he was running.

Officers canvassed the area and found Brown at Glebe and Wentworth streets, Francis said.

He was arrested and taken to the Charleston County Detention Center. He is charged with first-degree burglary.

Francis said the investigation is ongoing.  According to an incident report, the victim heard Brown yell out "Steve!" as he exited her home, implying there was another suspect in the area.
