LADSON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has accused a Ladson mother with causing the death of her 17-month-old child last year.

United States Marshal arrested 21-year-old Lorena Contreras Castillo at her Fairview Drive home Wednesday morning, according to Major Jim Brady with the sheriff's office.  She is charged with homicide by child abuse.

Brady said the charges come following an investigation which began after Castillo's baby died at the hospital on Aug. 13, 2012.

According to Brady, Castillo first took the baby to MUSC on Aug. 5, saying the child had passed out.  While nurses noted that the child was active, playful and acted age appropriate the child was admitted for observation and discharged in stable condition on Aug. 8.

Brady said less than six hours after being discharged, EMS was called to the residence in reference to the child being found unresponsive and not breathing. The child was transported to Trident Hospital then transferred to MUSC where the child died on Aug. 13.

Detectives began the investigation on Aug. 16, 2012 after being notified of the child's death by the Charleston County Coroner's Office.

Brady said investigators determined through medical information presented by a pediatric doctor that the child's death was due to an inflicted injury cutting off the oxygen to the child by smothering or similar mechanism, not from an underlying medical condition.

Castillo was denied bond during a hearing Wednesday.  She remains behind bars at the Charleston County Detention Center.
