(CNN) - Carnival Cruise Lines will spend more than $300 million to upgrade its fleet after a string of problems on ships.

Carnival is adding more generator power to all of its 24 ships. It will keep toilets, water systems and elevators running in the event a ship loses power.

The upgrades will also include new fire safety technology.

The improvement plan is the result of a company review conducted after the fallout from the Carnival Triumph.

An engine fire blew out power to the ship in February, leaving thousands of passengers stranded in the Gulf of Mexico.

Carnival also announced it will form an advisory board to review safety and reliability. Carnival said the overhaul is already underway and will not affect scheduled itineraries.
