COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A husband and wife are behind bars accused of stealing a fuel tanker and 3,600 gallons of gas from the National Guard Armory in Colleton County.

The Colleton County Sheriff's Office arrested 42-year-old Clarence Edward Risher, Jr. and 43-year-old Melinda Montjoy Risher.

Authorities say between April 26, 2013 and April 29, 2013 a military fuel tanker was stolen from the National Guard Armory in Colleton County. At the time of the theft, the tanker contained 3,600 gallons of diesel fuel.

The sheriff's office says on April 30, the tanker was returned to the armory without its fuel. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources was requested to assist in the investigation and deployed a plane and ATVs to assist.

An incident report states investigators were able to link two people in the area to the fuel theft. Deputies say they discovered 2,675 gallons of stolen diesel fuel following a search of two homes on Risher Mountain Road.

According to authorities, 10 portable tanks containing the stolen fuel were found in the homes.

Investigators also seized a John Deere Tractor which the sheriff's office believes was used to clear up evidence that the tanker was at the suspects' homes.

The sheriff's office is continuing the investigation with additional arrests pending.
