JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - A Johns Island man is behind bars following a Wednesday night shooting thanks in part to the quick thinking of a witness, deputies say.
Fabian Hernandez, 25, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.
According to court documents, the victim met Hernandez at a Kangaroo Gas Station located at 503 Main Road around 6:50 p.m. to buy drugs.
When the victim pulled out the money Hernandez fired two shots from a .38 caliber revolver, hitting the victim in the left arm. Hernandez then took the money and fled the scene, documents state.
Deputies say a witness inside the gas station heard the first gunshot and ran outside to see Hernandez shoot the victim in his arm. When the suspect got into a green SUV to drive away, the witness took down his South Carolina license plate number.
Another witness told police she saw money blowing around approximately one to two miles down River Road. Believing the gas station may have been robbed, the witness collected the $260 in cash and gave it to deputies at Kangaroo, according to an incident report.
Documents state deputies were able to use the suspect's license plate number to find his home on Walpole Way, where Hernandez admitted to the shooting.
The victim was taken to Roper St. Francis by family members, according to the court documents. He remained at the hospital on Thursday.
Hernandez is being held at the Charleston County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond. In court, Hernandez's lawyer asked the judge for a lower bond because the suspect did not have a prior criminal record, but the request was denied.
Deputies said some people believed to be part of the incident were pulled over on I-526 near Highway 61 shortly after the incident. They were later released after questioning.
