Inmate gets additional month in jail after cursing at judge

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - An inmate was given 30 more days in jail after calling a judge a derogatory name during a bond hearing in Charleston on Thursday.

Mark L. Swinton, who is facing an attempted murder charge from late January, was in bond court accused of spitting on a guard's face at the Al Cannon Detention Center after he refused to return to his cell.

When Judge Linda Lombard asked Swinton twice why he was presently in jail, Swinton told Lombard that he would not answer since his lawyer was not present.

Lombard noted that Swinton had a number of charges and convictions against him.

After bond was set for a throwing of bodily fluids charge, Swinton said, "$30,000 ain't (expletive). When I get out, I'm going to get that charge dismissed, (expletive)!"

Lombard then ordered Swinton back to the jail conference camera and asked him to apologize to the court.

"Why?" Swinton asked."You going to give me about 10 more days in county jail? That don't hurt anything."

"You will apologize to this court or I will give you 30 days in jail," Lombard said.

Lombard then gave Swinton 30 more days for contempt of court after Swinton refused to apologize.

"Don't nobody care about no 30 days, girl," Swinton said as he was leaving.
