CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)- In a unanimous vote Thursday, members of the Charleston County Council Finance Committee shot down a proposal that would use tax dollars to  build a wastewater system associated with a new Johns Island housing development.

Next Tuesday the full Charleston County Council will  have a final  vote on the measure that would create a  Tax Increment Finance district or TIF.

It would put local tax dollars  toward building a wastewater system associated with Kiawah River Plantation, a housing development planned for Johns Island.

Supporters of the TIF district argue investing now in the infrastructure of the large housing development would boost  property values  and generate more money for the county through property taxes in the future.

But opponents said during a presentation at Thursday night's meeting  the proposal has some legal and policy issues that need to be resolved.
