NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) - The North Charleston Fire Department says eight units were severely damaged during an apartment blaze on Nelson Street Monday morning.
Firefighters arrived at Dorchester Village just after 7 a.m. and saw smoke and flames coming from the Unit 8 building. A section of the roof suffered extensive damage.
Emergency officials evacuated the building and quickly went to work, bringing the fire under control within the hour.
The woman living in the unit the apartment started in said she turned on her heater just before the blaze. Other residents reported hearing an explosion.
Fire officials said 23 people were displaced by the fire.
No one was injured.
Leslie and Nelson streets are expected to remain closed to traffic until around noon.
North Charleston firefighters were joined by Charleston Fire Department and St. Andrews Fire Department crews.
