COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Walterboro Public Safety Chief Otis Rhodes has been let go.

The department released a statement Friday afternoon stating Rhodes, who has been the chief of police and public safety director for nine years, has been relieved of his duties.

Walterboro Mayor Bill Young confirmed Friday that Rhodes was terminated around 11 a.m.  Young said the decision to dismiss Rhodes was made by City Manager Jeff Lord.

"We are grateful to Otis for his contributions, but the time has come for someone else to continue the progress that has been made and to pave the way for even more in the future," Lord said."There's work to be done, and I am confident the City and its citizens will be best served by new leadership in the Public Safety Department."

Specifics on reasons for the termination have not been provided.  A spokesperson with the department said she could not provide more details at the time, as it was "a personnel matter."

Major Ken Dasen, Assistant Public Safety Director, who has been with the department for 15 years, will serve as Acting Director until an Interim Director is in place.
