MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A traffic improvement project once on the back burner is now taking priority after a gridlocked Memorial Day weekend in Mt. Pleasant.
Traffic along the Isle of Palms Connector was bumper to bumper all last weekend with folks leaving and going to IOP and Sullivan's Island.
The Charleston County Finance Committee will spend part of Thursday evening discussing the IOP Connector project, which calls for the addition of one extra lane from Highway 17 North to Riviera Drive. The project also calls for more turning lanes at the intersection of Rifle Range Road and Hungryneck Boulevard
If approved, the $3 million project is expected to start after Labor Day and be completed sometime in December.
Charleston County Vice Chairman Elliot Summey says the improvements are necessary not only for the folks who live on the island, but also for our tourists, "We want to make sure that we accommodate those folks in the region that want to go to that lovely beach but at the same time we keep the quality of life for the citizens who live on Sullivan's Island and Isle of Palms."
"I think that's a very big part of it and hopefully this widening project will do that."
The committee meeting starts at 5 p.m. in the Lonnie Hamilton Public Services Building on Bridge View Drive in North Charleston. The public is invited to attend.
