Highway 17N reopened in Awendaw-McClellanville area

Deputies: A section of Hwy. 17N could be shut down, roadways still flooded in Awendaw

AWENDAW, SC (WCSC) - Highway 17 North has been reopened in the Awendaw-McClellanville area after flooding receded on Friday.

Charleston County Sheriff's Major Jim Brady said Guerrins Bridge Road was also passable now.  While there is still standing water in the area, it's not causing traffic delays.

Nearly 10 inches of rain was dumped on the Awendaw area of Charleston County Wednesday. The effect of that, along with rain from Tropical Storm Andrea took its toll on sections of Hwy. 17N.

Captain Jim Woods said, "We've had individuals going through this water at 60 mph and the water behind you is about 3 to 4 feet deep, meaning when their vehicle hydroplanes losing control and they go in 3 or 4 feet of water, it's not a pretty situation."

Captain Woods said, "We spoke to one woman that couldn't get out of her house and her husband was staying in Mount Pleasant because he couldn't get into the house."
