Father caught, son still sought following high-speed chase, $45K AC theft
DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - St. George police say a man accused of stealing $45,000 worth of copper from AC units at a hotel then leading investigators on a high-speed chase which ended in a wreck has been arrested.
Police say 53-year-old Don Eric Skinner Sr. was found hiding in a home in North Charleston overnight. He was taken to the Dorchester County Detention Center.
Police are still looking for Skinner's son, 23-year-old Don Eric Skinner Jr., in connection with the thefts and chase.
On June 8 at 11:50 p.m., police responded to the Days Inn on 126 Interstate Drive for a break-in in progress. The victim reported that she saw three men dressed in all black at the rear of the hotel which was currently closed for renovations.
When police arrived, officers saw a burgundy car leaving from behind the hotel.
A police report states the suspects' vehicle did not stop and sped up on I-95. During the pursuit, officers say speeds reached 120 mph.
Investigators say when the suspects' car took exit 82 at a high rate of speed, the vehicle went off the roadway and crashed into a field next to a hotel on Conners Drive.
Authorities say Skinner Jr., who was driving the car, and Skinner Sr. took off on foot following the wreck.
Another passenger, Andre Skinner, who is Skinner Sr.'s nephew, was taken into custody at the scene and identified his family members as the suspects who fled the scene.
Officers say they found 15 cooling coils, worth $45,000, taken from the Days Inn in the back seat and trunk of the suspects' car. An incident report states $6,000 worth of damage was also done to some of the stolen material.
According to investigators, two sledgehammers and a pair of gloves were also found in the car.
Andre Skinner was charged with possession of tools of a crime, obtaining non-ferrous metals unlawfully and grand larceny.
