MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Mount Pleasant police are investigating after a gas station clerk was robbed at knifepoint early Friday.

Police responded to the Kangaroo Express on Highway 17 North near Highway 41 around 4 a.m.  When they arrived, the clerk told police she was behind the register counter when a black male wearing a white t-shirt, blue pants, and a white cloth mask entered the store holding a large silver knife.

The clerk said she tried to walk out of the store but the suspect came up behind her and held the knife up as he said "give me the money."  The woman said she gave the suspect about $100 from the register and he ran outside and turned towards Sonic.

K-9 units were able to track the suspect's trail across Highway 17 to Crystal Drive.  The K-9 then made a right down the ditch line towards Yough Hall Road.  Police said the trail ended at a dirt road cul-de-sac where fresh tire tracks and a footprint were found.

The investigation is ongoing.  The gas station was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
