MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Mt. Pleasant Fire Department officials say five people were injured with one in serious condition following a nitrogen tank explosion near Patriots Point.

Battalion Chief Steven Drozd said the victims were workers using nitrogen to fill a pipe when a piece of equipment failed, causing an explosion which injured them.

"We had a workplace accident here," Drozd said. "Some guys doing a procedure in a confined area."

According to Drozd, the piece of equipment that failed was made of glass and contained a liquid that had turned into a gaseous state.

Authorities say when the equipment fell to the ground, it caused an explosion which injured the workers who were working above ground. Drozd said there were also workers below ground, but they were not injured by the blast.

Drozd said the injuries looked to be from shrapnel caused by the blast.
