Sheriff's office: Deputies find bank robber driving drunk at resort

BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has arrested a suspected bank robber after deputies say they found the suspect driving drunk at a resort on Hilton Head Island.

Investigators arrested 58-year-old Douglas Albert Haff of Hilton Head Friday afternoon and charged him with entering a bank with intent to steal in connection with a robbery that happened on Thursday at the First Federal Bank on 79 Lighthouse Rd.

On Friday afternoon, deputies stopped a car in the area of Greenwood Drive at the Sea Pines Resort after receiving several tips that the driver of the car matched the description of the bank robbery suspect.

An incident report states when deputies made contact with the driver, later identified as Haff, authorities found numerous open beer cans in his vehicle, and later determined Haff was driving under the influence.

According to the sheriff's office, a search of Haff's vehicle yielded evidence which was identified from Thursday's bank robbery.

Haff was also arrested for DUI and open container charges

Investigators say the suspect entered the bank Thursday afternoon, threatened to have an explosive device and demanded money. After being given money by a teller, the suspect left the bank.

Surveillance pictures show that the suspect appears to be wearing a plastic bag over his head.
