CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC/AP) - Tropical Storm Chantal is no more after it was weakened considerably as it skirted the southern coast of the Dominican Republic earlier on Wednesday.

The remnants of the storm are still expected to impact the Lowcountry as early as Thursday.

The tropical moisture left by Chantal and a front in our area could bring us heavy rainfall for the weekend.

The rain starts to creep up on Thursday, and by Friday through Sunday we could experience some significant rain and possibly some flooding issues.

Earlier on Wednesday, the storm had been skirting the coast of the Dominican Republic. People had been largely ignored warnings issued by the government to leave their homes.

Instead, people were fortifying houses with extra tarps and wood, and gathering supplies.
