Top Cop competition raises money for deputy's family

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Law enforcement officers from around the Lowcountry took part in the Top Cop competition on Friday, and it was all for a good cause.

Officers participated in a friendly competition at the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office in Summerville showcasing their skills.

But Friday's competition is more than just competing against fellow officers. It was about showing support for one of their own. The officers competed in a precision emergency response driving course, tactical firearms skills and a general knowledge test.

The event was put on to support Deputy Stephen Hayes' family. Hayes' wife is fighting a kidney disorder and needs a kidney transplant and their son is autistic and needs weekly medical care that isn't covered by medical insurance

"It's really overwhelming and there's really no words to describe it except pride" said Charlotte Hayes."Since this has happened to me and our family, the community has just been amazing. I don't know what else to say except amazing and we have been extremely blessed."

Friday's winner receives an all expense paid trip for two to Atlantic City for three days with air fare included. But at the end of the day, the real prize is the one these officers share everyday. The opportunity to help others.
