Cops: Thief quickly apprehended after stealing police bike equipped with GPS

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Investigators say a James Island man is behind bars after he was caught stealing a police bait bike which was equipped with a GPS tracking device.

The Charleston Police Department charged 55-year-old Vernon Anthony Green with property crime enhancement.

On Tuesday morning, police responded to King Street in reference to a CPD bait bicycle being stolen.  Authorities say the bicycle had a GPS tracking device embedded which enabled officers to locate the bike in the area of King and Huger streets.

According to officers, Green was found riding the bike in the wrong lane toward on-coming traffic.

Police say Green made several "spontaneous utterances" stating that he found the bicycle on the ground in front of a bar on King Street.

Green said that when he found the bike, it was not locked, so he took it.

An incident report states Green was charged with property crime enhancement because of his previous shoplifting and burglary convictions.
