SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - White powder found inside a magazine at a Summerville home prompted a scare Saturday night, but turned out to be corn starch, authorities say.

According to Berkeley County Emergency Preparedness Director Tom Smith, a family living in the 200 block of Trestlewood Drive came home around 7:30 p.m. and opened the mail to find white powder inside a magazine.

About 80 emergency officials in all, including the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, a bomb squad, two Haz-Mat crews, and SLED agents, were called to the scene.  Smith said the powder was identified as corn starch a little over four hours after the discovery, and called the incident a hoax.

Smith called the incident a hoax.

Trestlewood Drive was closed until authorities cleared the scene.  About 20 homes were affected.
