WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - A 53-year-old woman tasked with caring for a mentally-disabled man is behind bars after investigators say she embezzled over $52,000 from his bank account and left him to live in a house with no electricity or running water.
Charleston County sheriff's deputies arrested Sharon Vernice Hollington, of 495 Hainsworth Drive in West Ashley, Tuesday morning and charged her with exploitation of a vulnerable adult.
Investigators say Hollington was supposed to care for a 57-year-old man diagnosed as being mentally disabled by the Department of Social Services seven years ago. As a result, investigators said Hollington became a joint account holder of the victim's BB&T account, starting in 2006.
Detectives say Hollington wrote checks for $1,075 each month from March 2008 and August 2012 to pay rent at her Hainsworth Drive home. At the same time, detectives say Hollington kept the victim in her un-kept residence at 2070 Savage Road.
Investigators say the home had holes in the floor and no electricity or running water.
Deputies say Hollington took $52,675 in all from the victim.
The investigation began early this year after the victim's cousin became wary he was being used by Hollington.
Hollington is being held in the Charleston County Detention Center under a $50,000 bond.
