2nd motorist charged in wreck that killed Summerville woman
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - South Carolina Highway Patrol have charged another motorist in connection with a wreck which took the life of a 21-year-old Summerville woman.
Troopers now say 17-year-old Cullen Depree is charged with reckless homicide after the wreck on Highway 17-A near Highway 61 on Aug. 24 took the life of Amanda Carey. Her friend, Taylor Watkins, also 21, was charged with driving under the influence at the time of the incident.
Troopers say the accident happened around 11:40 p.m., when a 2000 Jeep driven by Watkins attempted to pass Depree's 2008 Mercury while both vehicles were traveling north. Authorities say the two vehicles made contact with each other and the Jeep ran off the road and overturned, ejecting Carey, a passenger.
Carey, a 2010 graduate of Fort Dorchester High School, was pronounced dead at the scene by Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet. Troopers said she was not wearing a seatbelt.
Depree and Watkins were not injured.
